Where to Stay Near Stratton Mountain: A Guide for Groups and Families

Stratton Mountain draws around 300,000 visitors a year. Most of them stay somewhere within a 20-minute drive. The options range from slopeside condos to off-mountain houses, and the right choice depends on your group size, your budget, and how close you want to be to the lifts.

Here’s what’s actually out there.

On-Mountain: Stratton Resort Lodging

Stratton’s own lodging sits at the base of the mountain. Long Trail House and Liftline Lodge are the main options. Walk-to-lift access, pool, fitness center. The rooms are hotel-style, mostly one and two bedrooms.

The upside is convenience. You roll out of bed and you’re at the gondola. The downside is price and space. Peak-season weekends run $400-600 a night for a one-bedroom. And if you’re traveling with more than four people, you’ll need multiple rooms.

Best for: couples or small families who want zero driving.

Off-Mountain Houses and Cabins

This is where most groups end up. Towns like Jamaica, Bondville, Winhall, and Rawsonville are all within 10-15 minutes of the access road. Houses in this range typically sleep 6-12 people with full kitchens, living rooms, and actual space to spread out.

The math works in your favor. A 4-bedroom house that sleeps 10 might run $350-500 a night in ski season. Split that across five couples or a family of eight and you are paying far less per person than a resort room. And you get a kitchen, which saves another $50-100 a day on restaurant meals.

Our property, Stratton Ski Haus, is in Jamaica, about 10 minutes from the mountain. Four bedrooms, sleeps 10, with a hot tub, barrel sauna, and fire pit. We built it for exactly this kind of trip.

Best for: groups of 6 or more, families with kids, multi-generational trips.

Bondville and the Access Road Corridor

Bondville is the closest village to Stratton’s access road. A handful of inns and rental properties sit along Route 30. You’re 5-7 minutes from the lifts, and there are a few restaurants within walking distance.

The Red Fox Inn is a traditional Vermont lodge with a tavern downstairs. Rooms are simple. A good option if you want something between a hotel and a full house rental.

Best for: small groups who want proximity without resort prices.

Manchester: The Upscale Option

Manchester is 25 minutes north on Route 30. A proper town with restaurants, shops, galleries, and the Hildene estate. The Equinox Resort is the flagship property. Kimpton Taconic is the more modern alternative.

Both are full-service hotels with spas, dining, and winter packages that include lift tickets. Nightly rates start around $250 and climb from there. The tradeoff is the commute. Twenty-five minutes each way adds up over a long ski weekend.

Best for: couples looking for a higher-end experience with things to do off the slopes.

Budget-Friendly: Londonderry and West Dover

Londonderry is 15 minutes east. West Dover is about 25 minutes and sits between Stratton and Mount Snow, which makes it a good base if you want to ski both mountains.

Vacation rentals in these towns run 20-30% less than properties closer to the access road. You will find 2- and 3-bedroom houses in the $200-350 range during ski season. The commute is slightly longer but the roads are straightforward.

Best for: budget-conscious groups, anyone splitting time between Stratton and Mount Snow.

What to Look For in a Stratton Rental

A few things that matter more than you would think:

Distance from the access road. Anything under 15 minutes is fine. Over 20 and the morning drive starts to feel long, especially with kids.

Hot tub. After a full day of skiing, this goes from “nice to have” to “non-negotiable” fast. Make sure it is maintained and not a seasonal amenity that gets shut down in winter.

Kitchen size. If you are cooking for 8-10 people, a galley kitchen with a two-burner stove will not cut it. Look for a full-size range, dishwasher, and counter space.

WiFi speed. Vermont properties vary wildly here. Some still run on DSL. Ask before you book, especially if anyone in your group needs to work remotely.

Ski storage and mudroom. Somewhere to dry boots and stash gear overnight. Not glamorous, but it matters.

Book Direct When You Can

A lot of the vacation rentals near Stratton are listed on Airbnb and VRBO. They are also available to book directly through the owner website. The difference is the service fee. Airbnb charges guests 14-16% on top of the nightly rate. On a $2,000 booking, that is $280-320 you are paying for the privilege of using their search engine.

Direct booking sites like ours do not charge that fee. Same property, same dates, lower total. And you are dealing directly with the owner if anything comes up during your stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I stay near Stratton Mountain for a group?
Off-mountain houses in Jamaica, Bondville, or Winhall are the best value for groups of 6+. You get full kitchens, multiple bedrooms, and the per-person cost drops well below hotel rates. Most are 10-15 minutes from the lifts.
