When most people think of Stratton Mountain, they picture fresh powder and ski lifts. But southern Vermont transforms into an outdoor paradise once the snow melts — and Stratton Ski Haus is the perfect base camp for all of it. Here are the best things to do near our A-frame rental during the warmer months.
Hiking & Trail Running
The Long Trail and Appalachian Trail both pass through the Stratton Mountain area. The Stratton Mountain summit hike (6.6 miles round-trip) rewards you with 360-degree views from a historic fire tower — the spot where the Long Trail was first conceived. For easier options, the Jamaica State Park trails along the West River offer gentle riverside walks perfect for families.
Mountain Biking
Stratton Mountain Resort opens its lift-served mountain biking trails from June through October. The network includes flow trails for beginners and technical singletrack for experienced riders. Bike rentals and lessons are available at the base lodge. For cross-country riding, the nearby West River Trail offers 16 miles of converted rail trail — flat, scenic, and great for all skill levels.
Golf at Stratton Mountain
The Stratton Mountain Golf Course is a 27-hole championship course designed by Geoffrey Cornish, set against a stunning mountain backdrop. It is consistently rated among Vermont’s top courses. Tee times fill up fast on summer weekends, so book ahead.
Swimming Holes & Rivers
Vermont is famous for its swimming holes, and the Stratton area delivers. Hamilton Falls in Jamaica State Park is a dramatic 125-foot cascade with pools below (note: swimming at the base of the falls is prohibited, but nearby pools are fair game). The West River offers calmer swimming spots, and Hapgood Pond in Peru is a family-friendly state recreation area with a sandy beach, lifeguards, and picnic areas.
Farmers Markets & Local Food
The Londonderry Farmers Market runs every Saturday from late May through October. Stock up on local cheese, maple syrup, fresh produce, and baked goods — then cook a farm-to-table dinner in Stratton Ski Haus’s fully equipped chef’s kitchen. For dining out, Depot Street Tavern in West Dover and The Roadhouse in Jamaica are local favorites.
Summer Concerts & Events
Stratton Mountain hosts a summer concert series, outdoor yoga, and seasonal festivals throughout the warm months. The nearby Weston Playhouse — Vermont’s oldest professional theater — runs shows from June through October. And Manchester, just 30 minutes north, offers outlet shopping, art galleries, and the Hildene estate.
