Killington is the biggest ski area in the East, and it rewards groups that plan ahead. Six peaks give beginners and experts room to split up all day. Then everyone meets back up for dinner. This guide covers the logistics that make a group trip work: getting there, where to sleep, tickets, and how to keep 12 or 16 people fed and happy.
Getting to Killington
Killington sits in central Vermont on Route 4. Plan on roughly 4.5 hours from Manhattan and about 3 hours from Boston. Hartford is closer to 3 hours. Most groups arrive Friday night, so leave early enough to beat the Route 4 traffic that builds after 6 PM on holiday weekends.
Carpool in SUVs with winter tires or all-wheel drive. Mountain roads get steep, and a January storm can turn a 10 minute drive into 30. Four cars is usually the practical limit for a rental house driveway, so check parking before you book.
Choosing Lodging That Fits the Whole Group
This is where group trips succeed or fail. Hotels and condos split a big group across floors and buildings. You lose the evenings together, and someone always ends up on a pull-out couch.
A whole house solves that. Look for real beds for every guest, enough bathrooms to get out the door by 8 AM, and a kitchen big enough for group breakfasts. For groups over 10, a duplex or two-unit home is the sweet spot. Each family or friend group gets its own space, and everyone still shares one address.
Killington Ski Haus was set up for exactly this. It’s a freshly renovated duplex 5 minutes from the K-1 Base Lodge, with two private 3-bedroom units that sleep 16 together. There are 4 king bedrooms, 2 bunk rooms with 2 bunk beds each, two full kitchens and two living rooms with propane fireplaces. Out back you’ll find a private hot tub and a big fire pit.
Lift Tickets and Passes
Killington uses dynamic pricing, so window rates climb on weekends and holidays. Buy online at least a week ahead. Your Killington ticket also works at Pico, a smaller mountain a few minutes down Route 4 that’s great for a quieter day.
Anyone with an Ikon Pass gets days at Killington and Pico. The full Ikon Pass includes up to 7 days with no blackouts. The Ikon Base Pass includes up to 5 days, with blackout dates on peak holidays. If your group skis Killington more than a handful of times a year, compare those against Killington’s own season passes. Our Vermont ski pass guide breaks down the options.
Splitting Up on the Mountain
Killington has 155 trails, which makes it easy for mixed groups. Beginners do well at Snowshed, where the learning area and gentle slopes sit right by the base lodge. Intermediates can spend all day cruising from the K-1 Express Gondola. Experts head for Superstar, where the World Cup races run each Thanksgiving weekend, or the moguls on Outer Limits at Bear Mountain.
Pick one lunch meeting spot and one time. Cell service on the mountain is decent, but a fixed plan beats a 16-person group chat.
Feeding a Big Group
Groceries are the biggest money saver. Cook breakfast and at least two dinners at the house. Shop in Rutland on the way in, since the selection is much bigger than at the stores on the mountain.
Book restaurants early for groups of 8 or more. Many places on Killington Road fill fast on Saturdays. See our Killington Road restaurant and après guide for where to go.
Après at Home
The best après is often the one with no wait. A hot tub, a fire pit and a fireplace turn the hours between last chair and dinner into the part everyone remembers. Make hot cocoa, pass the s’mores and let the evening slow down. Bring your own firewood, since most rentals don’t supply it. Convenience and grocery stores near the access road sell bundles.
Group Trip Checklist
- Book lodging 2 to 3 months out for holiday weeks.
- Collect deposits early. One person paying for 16 gets awkward fast.
- Buy lift tickets online a week or more ahead.
- Check parking limits and plan your cars around them.
- Assign one cook per night and one grocery run on arrival.
- Pack boot bags. Boot warmers at the house help, but wet gloves still need room to dry.
